Quebec Merchants Acquiring Organic Food and Agricultural Produce
Originating from Outside Quebec

Updated on May 6, 2008, the list appearing in this section names firms who have obtained organic products from outside of Quebec and who have returned to the CAAQ, the 2008 Annual Declaration for Merchants Acquiring Organic Food and Agricultural Products from Outside Quebec.

Definition

A firm is deemed to be a "merchant" as soon as it acquires food and agricultural products bearing organic references from suppliers established outside of the province of Quebec, and that intend to market them within Quebec. The term merchant generally refers to a firm marketing a product for the first time within the territory of Quebec.

Requirements for Accepting and Marketing Organic Products in Quebec Market

  • Every product acquired to be marketed in Quebec must be certified by a certification agency, the legal name of the certifier must appear on the product's packaging and must comply with labeling regulations in Quebec within the framework of Act A20.02. (see Appendix 1, ORG1)
  • The first list of certification agencies carrying out activities outside Quebec and who have been approved by the CAAQ for the marketing of certified products in Quebec, has been made public in October 2002.
  • As of July 1, 2003, every organic product originating from outside Quebec must be certified by a certification agency duly recognized by the CAAQ, i.e. included on the list of authorized certifying bodies.
  • It is merchant's responsibility to submit an application to the CAAQ in order to obtain approval for any certifier not appearing on this list. Thus it may take a certain amount of time before for a certifier can be approved.
