The Conseil des appellations réservées et des termes valorisants (CARTV) was set up by the Government of Québec on November 6, 2006, pursuant to the Act Respecting Reserved Designations and Added-Value Claims (L.R.Q., chapitre A-20.03). The object of this Act is to protect the authenticity of products and of terms used to identify and promote them, through product certification based on origins or on special characteristics associated with a production method or specificity.

It is an excellent summary of the main requirements that are applicable to the various operations performed in order to obtain an organic product. Moreover it provides an overview of the differences between organic standards prescribed through regulations into effect worldwide.

The Québec Bar confirms the Act's relevance

In the latest edition of the Revue du Barreau du Québec, an article on the Act Respecting Reserved Designations and Added-Value Claims tries to demonstrate how it, with agri-food and designation products certification, could become a Quebec government’s legal tool to help establish the agriculture and agri-food sector’s vision, released by the CAAAQ. The article is entitled "The differentiated product’s development as part of a new agricultural policy in Quebec: the provision of the Act Respecting Reserved Designations and Added-Value Claims". It can be found on page 449 of the Revue du Barreau (french version only).

CARTV's presence in Events

The CARTV will participate to two important events in the coming months. It will first have a stand at the Eat Well Expo from March 19th to 21st at the Palais des congrès de Montréal and from March 27th to 28th at the Centre des Congrès de Québec. The CARTV will then be present at the SIAL (The North American Food Marketplace) from April 21st to 23rd at the Palais des congrès de Montréal. February 11, 2010 : CGSB Organic Standards now free of charge

The CFIA and the Canada Organic Office announced that the CGSB Organic Standards are now available on the CGSB website free of charge.

Québec received its organic standard recognition

Québec received last December its organic standards recognition within the Canada Organic Regime. Québec organic operators may now obtain Canadian certification by an extension of the certification obtained by Québec standards. Thus, products certified by this standard will now be recognized in conformity with the Federal Regulations and may be marketed in the Canadian and export markets with the same benefits as products certified according to the Canadian standard, in addition, bear the Canadian logo. This recognition should apply until June 2011.

Canadian accreditation

Ecocert Canada, Letis, OCIA, Pro-Cert Organic, QAI and Québec Vrai are all authorized by the CARTV to offer Quebec the organic certification per the Canadian Standards.

IGP - Agneau de Charlevoix

Processing companies having been certified IGP-Agneau de Charlevoix by the BNQ bear now the logo that CARTV has registered as an official mark to identify the products complying with the specifications of this designation.

European Accreditation

The CARTV has granted Ecocert Canada and Quebec Vrai an extension of their accreditation scope to certify organic products in Canada according to European Council Regulation (CE) No 834/2007 of June 28, 2007.

June 30, 2009

The Canada's Organic Products Regulations come into force. From now on, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) will control the organic certification of all organic products sold in Quebec but coming from outside its territory. Organic certification must be compliant with the Regulations.
