Designations Envisaged in Quebec Protected Geographical Indication

Protected Geographical Indication

A protected geographical indication establishes a link between a product and a region. It specifies that a product originates from a region and thus has a specific quality, reputation or other characteristic that might be attributed to this region and whose production and/or processing and/or development took place within a specifically delineated geographic area. The IGP does not however require that all operations forming part of the production chain be carried out within a single area or region.

With this designation, the link to a local soil remains as one of the production, processing or development steps that may provide a product with its widely recognized reputation. Thus for meat, the link would be to animals originating from certain regions. For example a Red Label is currently attributed to poultry from the Challans area in France, or to lamb from Sardinia, due to an intense and wild game flavor, reflecting its territory of origin.
