Why do we Use Reserved Designations?
Reserved designations play various essential roles within our market economies.
Basically, designations serve to guarantee consumers that products are authentic and of superior quality, meaning that they:
- Originate from a specified area
- Are fabricated through respect for a tradition
- Are based on production methods very carefully defined by a set of specifications, and
- Have been monitored by an independent organization.
For all the above reasons, reserved designations are an unquestionable pledge of credibility.
As for the agri-food sector, designations mean that producers and their products will be protected against any encroachment or imitation. It attributes value to a certain know-how that met a set of specifications designed specifically to preserve the quality and express the intrinsic characteristics of each product.
Lastly, from a social point of view, designations make a significant contribution to the preservation of traditional economic activities, while also providing substantial incomes to those involved and thus slowing a rural exodus.
